GRESHAM ROAD STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

with RH Partnership

for Hughes Hall, Cambridge

Laura Stone - Director; Tatyana Larikova - Senior Landscape Architect

Hughes Hall wish to develop postgraduate student accommodation at Gresham Road on a site adjacent to the University of Cambridge (Fenners) Cricket Ground.  The accommodation is to provide high quality living comprising of 85 rooms set around a courtyard.  Livingston Eyre are Landscape Architects within the College’s design team and have been appointed from concept stage through to completion.

The central courtyard is designed to be a relaxing sunny space, partially screened from Gresham Road.  Kitchen terraces spill out onto its edges and the planting has been designed to include a number of herbs and edible species.

Facing Fenners Cricket Ground, a number of mature horse chestnut trees had become crowded.  It was decided that they should be removed in order to allow space for a courtyard to the benefit of the Grehsam Road streetscape.  Livingston Eyre were instrumental in  negotiations with Cambridge’s Tree Officer, providing convincing reasons why the existing trees could not remain and  devising a new layout comprising a particular varitey of  small-leaved lime that will not outgrow the space.

Completed 2016
