Competition entry for Trafford to design a new play area in Altrincham's John Leigh Park. The Park is sited on the grounds of Oldfield Hall which was built in the mid seventeenth century.
The gateposts to the Hall still stand. They provide an important link with the Park's past. The form of the gate posts lends itself to a new hedge. The hedge is formed from both naturally 'mounding' shrubs and topiary.
Landform also helps define boundaries and create enclosure whilst providing uninterrupted views of the Park and Play area. The key feature of the Play area is a crescent shaped landform. The height of which is emphasised by a low ditch or ha-ha. The landforms enclose and create space as well as providing opportunity for adventurous play. A new embankment slide and tunnel net makes use of the topography. Additional smaller landforms or 'Drumlins' provide further play opportunities. Small reinforced grass drumlins provide vantage points and playforms.
A play area for younger children is enclosed by a ha-ha. Children can safely play whilst maintaining existing views. Existing mature trees provide structure, shelter and shading.
