The Faringdon wing is a new secure mental health unit completed in 1999 the Bedfordshire and Luton community NHS Trust. The challenges of designing a landscape for this unit included the issue of achieving high security whilst also maintaining a positive environment for both the residents and staff.
A sunken courtyard at the centre of the scheme provides a feeling an enclosed and private space, without compromising on the need for supervision and openness throughout the landscape. The sensitive choice of materials echoes and augments those used within the new buildings, allowing the hard landscape to grow out from the surrounding architecture.
