The practice won a competition to design a combined nursery and community building, located within Firth Park, a Victorian public park on the outskirts of Sheffield. The new building accommodates four nursery classrooms, dining area and cafe, an exhibition space, and administration and training facilities for the local community.
The landscape design proposals for the site aim to relate the new building to its setting, providing a welcoming entrance to the building and the park, and improvements to the adjacent areas of the park to create an integrated resource for the local community.
A generous paved square, with tree planting, places to sit, and bicycle parking, links to the main entrance of the new building. In front of the building there are further places to sit, flanked by planted beds, and covered parking for buggies. The square links to routes into the park, where there are new lawns, paths, area of display planting, and seating, as well as a café terrace with views over the park.
The nursery garden is divided internally by low walls into sequences of outdoor play spaces of relating to those within the building. In each sequence, the area adjacent to the building is envisaged as an extension of the play room for everyday use, whilst the play spaces further from the building offer opportunities for more challenging activities. Access to the more challenging areas and the garden pavilion is controlled by means of gates, so nursery staff will have the flexibility to decide on the most suitable configuration of space for a particular group or activity. The high boundary walls ensure that the nursery is secure, but ‘windows’ allow visual connections to the park beyond.
